Storytime STEM Pack: Moonbear's Shadow

This Storytime STEM-pack includes all the materials you need to engage kids in a science activity that combines the concept of light with the path of the sun across the sky, by engaging children in the phenomenon of shadows. The activity is launched by reading the popular children’s book Moonbear’s Shadow. This is followed by children modeling scenes from the book, using a flashlight and a bear, pond, tree set-up. Children reinforce their learning by explaining how they could make the shadow different lengths and directions, and making an argument of what is needed to make a shadow, using the Making a Shadow concept card.  

Included in this set, you'll find:

  • Detailed instructions (i.e., lesson plan) for the learning activities
  • Shadow making materials for six groups of four kids
    • 6 flashlights (colors vary), batteries included
    • 6 green felt mats and blue felt ponds with fish
    • 6 bears (colors vary)
    • 6 Kirigami trees
  • Making a Shadow concept card (8.5x11)
  • A copy of Moonbear’s Shadow by Frank Ash

The entire activity takes approximately 45 minutes to complete.  

This STEM-pack is suitable for grades PreK-1.

IMPORTANT NOTES: PLEASE READ!

  • Please only reserve the amount of items needed for your students. 
  • Items will be delivered and picked up by the BCIU delivery service and will be subject to their established delivery schedule and district building pickup and drop-off locations. 
  • Items can be borrowed for a maximum of two weeks (extensions can be requested). 
  • Please complete this reservation form AT LEAST one week prior to requesting date. We will do our best to honor request dates, but know this will be dependent on availability and staffing. We cannot guarantee delivery dates for requests that are submitted at the last minute. 
  • Please note: There is a $40 BCIU delivery fee for materials delivery to non-public schools. Non-public teachers are welcome to pick up materials at BCIU Main Office for no cost. 

NOTE: Storytime STEM-packs users will need to submit a list of any kit consumables that were used while in your classroom so they can be replenished for the next reservation.
