Geometric Measurement: Area and Perimeter

This Storytime STEM-Pack includes all the materials you need to engage kids in a mathematics activity that addresses the concept of geometric measurement – area and perimeter by designing a Zoo animal enclosure. The activity is launched by reading the popular children's book Ellie with them, and telling each child that they are going to be an architect and design an enclosure for a Zoo animal that they select from a collection of plastic animals provided. The activity concludes with children sharing their enclosure designs and comparing perimeter and area, using card stock squares.  Included in this set, you'll find:

  • Detailed instructions (i.e., lesson plan) for the learning activities
  • Materials for twelve groups of two kids to design a Zoo enclosure for their selected plastic animal (pipe cleaners, glue, square inch card stock tiles), pipe cleaner colors may vary
  • Animal enclosure design template
  • Word wall cards to use in context
  • A copy of Ellie by Mike Wu

The entire activity takes approximately 45 minutes to complete.  This STEM-Pack is suitable for grades 3-4.

NOTE: Storytime STEM-packs users will need to submit a list of any kit consumables that were used while in your classroom so they can be replenished for the next reservation.
