Storytime STEM Pack: The Rainbow Fish
STEM Concept: Number and Operations- Fractions
Visualizing Unit and Equivalent Fractions
This Storytime STEM-Pack includes all the materials you need to engage kids in a mathematics activity that addresses the concept of visualizing unit and equivalent fractions by designing a stained glass window. The activity is launched by reading the popular children's book The Rainbow Fish with them, and telling each child that they are going to be an architect and design a stained glass window for an underwater castle for the rainbow fish and his friends, that includes one fourth shiny material. Included in this set, you'll find:
- Detailed instructions (i.e., lesson plan) for the learning activities
- Materials for each of 24 children to make their own stained glass window (adhesive transparency, aluminum foil, rainbow color tissue paper)
- Stained Glass design template
- A copy of The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister
The entire activity takes approximately 45 minutes to complete. This STEM-Pack is suitable for grades 1-4.
IMPORTANT NOTES: PLEASE READ!

Able to replenish the items yourself through the stash of typical school supplies? Awesome! Please consider doing so and pay it forward.
