Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit 16
Engineering is Elementary (EiE) - Lighten Up (Lighting Systems)
Grades 1-5 (Grade 4).
Optical Engineering. Physical Sciences
Boston Museum of Science offers the "Engineering is Elementary" (EiE) curriculum. This curriculum is a dynamic and evolving program designed to introduce elementary school students to the field of engineering through engaging and hands-on activities, fostering their problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
In Lighten Up: Designing Lighting Systems, students explore the properties and behavior of light and the use of light in engineering. The unit begins with the storybook Omar’s Time to Shine, in which a boy named Omar living in Egypt explores the field of Optical Engineering and then uses what he knows to save his school’s play performance by designing an improvised lighting system. Over the course of the unit, students investigate how light behaves when interacting with certain materials. Like Omar, students then follow the steps of the Engineering Design Process to imagine, plan, create, and improve their own lighting systems in a model tomb.
Reservation Includes: One Educator Guide, 30 Student Storybooks, and one Materials Kit for 24 learners.
Together, these components create a high-quality, hands-on STEM learning experience.
